report within the “Knowledge is Power” series, titled “
The Global Tobacco Index 2021: Where Does Jordan Stand in its Battle with Cancerous Pandemic”, on World

The report springs from the need to achieve the
purpose of the
World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco
Control, which Jordan joined in February 2005 and which reaffirms the right of
all people to the highest standard of health, focusing on the need to protect
present and future generations from the harm of tobacco consumption.
The forum noted that smoking has negative effects on
human health and the environment, being a major cause of
cancer, and posed an
additional risk to all countries in the light of the COVID-19 epidemic.
Tobacco consumption causes more than 7 million
direct deaths and around 1.2 indirect deaths among second-hand consumers,
according to WHO annual estimates and to a survey conducted by the Jordanian
Ministry of Health in collaboration with WHO in 2019, which found Jordan to be
the world’s largest consumer of
tobacco.
The 2021 report, which
was based on the Global Tobacco Industry Intervention Index of the
Global Centre for Good Governance in Tobacco Control and was done in partnership with
the Stopping Tobacco Organizations and Products, included 80 countries.
Brunei ranked first at global level in the
intervention index, while Oman was the best among
Arab countries and
internationally; Jordan ranked six among Arab countries, and 27 out of the 80
surveyed for the report.
