AMMAN — A
report issued by the information center of the Kuwaiti Council of Ministers
last August on Arab divorce rates indicated that Jordan ranks third in the
Arab world, at 37.2 percent of the total number of marriages, Khaberni reported on
Saturday.

According to the
report, Kuwait tops the list in the Arab world, despite the decline in its
population, as the divorce rate there had risen to 48 percent of the total
number of marriages.
The report places
Egypt in second place, followed by Qatar after Jordan where the divorce rate
rose to 37 percent in fourth place. Lebanon and the UAE were equal in divorce
rates, at 34 percent each, followed by Sudan at 30 percent, Iraq at 22.7
percent, and Saudi Arabia at 21.5 percent.
Economic factors
were given as reasons for the increase in divorce cases in Egypt and other Arab
countries where living and economic conditions are similar, but in wealthy Gulf
countries, legal and community experts stress that the majority of divorce
cases are due mainly to domestic violence and inability to take responsibility.
Traditionally, a divorced woman in Arab societies bears the
bulk of the burden and the stigma resulting from divorce, but in the
Mauritanian society the social value of a divorced woman increases, according
to tribal customs.
