AMMAN — The Director of the National Center for Forensic
Medicine at the Ministry of Health Majed Al-Shamayleh, has revealed that his
department dealt with 119 murder cases and 137 suicide cases in 2022.

These numbers reveal a worrying trend, with a total of 256
violent deaths in just one year.
Child suicidesShamayleh also noted that there has been a disturbing
increase in child suicides in Jordan, with his department dealing with eight
cases of children under the age of 15 who took their own lives in 2022.
This number includes five boys and three girls.
Traffic deathsThe department also dealt with 551 traffic accident cases in
2022, a number that highlights the need for increased road safety measures.
However, Shamayleh clarified that the number of deaths resulting from these
accidents was much higher, with 9,343 deaths recorded by forensic medicine
centers in the country.
Gender disparitiesOf the 137 suicide cases in 2022, 104 were males and 33 were
females. Similarly, of the 119 murder cases recorded, 91 were males and 28 were
females.
In 2021, the country recorded 186 suicide cases, a 10
percent increase from the previous year. The 2021 suicide cases were the
highest since 2017, which recorded 130 cases, and 142 cases in 2018.
