AMMAN — The
United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has selected the Jordanian village of Al-Sila, located in
the south of the Tafilah Governorate, as one of the best tourist villages for
2023. This global recognition is awarded to exceptional villages dedicated to
preserving rural areas, natural landscapes, cultural diversity, local values,
and culinary traditions.

In its third cycle, the organization selected
54 villages out of 260 worldwide, adding 20 new villages to its development
program. As a result, all 74 villages are now part of the
UNWTO’s network of
the best tourist villages. This announcement was made during the General Assembly
of the organization held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Al Mamlaka TV reported.
Al-Sila Village, located 16 kilometers south
of Tafilah city boasts a historical fortress-built thousands of years ago,
showcasing its role in successive human civilizations. The fortress site
includes palaces, caves, examples of art, sculpture, architecture, ancient
irrigation systems, and
archaeological watchtowers.
Hani Al-Omaryin, president of the Al-Sila
Tourism Association, previously stated that the Al-Sila region is one of Jordan's
most important historical and
archaeological sites, with a history dating back
to around 800 BC. He emphasized the need to focus on developing the area's
facilities, improving services, infrastructure, attracting investments, and
promoting tourism projects.
