The report highlighted that Jordan's food prices continued to rise for six consecutive months in 2023, with increases of 0.8 percent in November, 1.7 percent in October, 1.3 percent in September, 0.6 percent in July, and 1.2 percent in August. This upward trend persisted, despite a 1 percent decline at the end of June and a 1.9 percent decrease at the end of May.

The bank stated that according to the Global Hunger Index (GHI) for 2023, refugee communities in Jordan are experiencing a surge in food insecurity. The bank also issued a warning regarding funding shortages for UN relief organizations in Jordan, explaining that escalating conflicts in the Middle East are constraining available aid for these communities, thereby exacerbating their food security challenges.

Moreover, the monthly report from the Department of Statistics (DoS) for the year 2023 noted a 2.08 percent increase in consumer prices compared to 2022. Every month, December saw a rise of 1.64 percent compared to the corresponding month in 2022, and a slight increase of 0.23 percent compared to November 2023.

Globally, local food price inflation continues to be high, with inflation surpassing 5 percent in 63.2 percent of low-income countries, 73.9 percent of lower-middle-income countries, 48 percent of upper-middle-income countries, and 46.3 percent of high-income countries.

In December 2023, the FAO Food Price Index (FFPI) reached 118.5 points, reflecting a decrease of 1.8 points or 1.5 percent from November 2023. The primary factors contributing to this decline were reductions in sugar and vegetable oil prices, while dairy and grain prices saw increases. The index stood 13.3 points lower or 10.1 percent than its December 2022 level, averaging 124.0 points for 2023, 19.7 lower than in 2022.
