AMMAN — Jordan's population has reached 11.4 million people,
according to Issa Masarwa, the secretary-general of the Higher Population
Council.

The country has experienced a significant population boom,
particularly among children, with 2.5 million births recorded since 2010.
This surge has been further exacerbated by the arrival of
Syrian refugees over the past decade.
Traditional family planning methods prove ineffective
Masarwa highlighted that despite a desire for smaller
families, people often resort to traditional methods of family planning that
are not always effective. Citing a recent survey, he said that 28 percent of
individuals continue to rely on these methods.
In response to this
trend, Masarwa called for the enhancement of family planning programs, the
dissemination of awareness campaigns, and the provision of guidance at health
centers and child vaccination clinics.
Imposing limits on childbearing ruled out
Masarwa also dismissed the idea of imposing laws to restrict
childbearing, asserting that such measures are not permissible. He emphasized
that it is the right of couples to decide the number of children they wish to
have and fulfill their desires in this regard.
Jordan conducted its inaugural population census in 1963,
which reported a population of 1 million at that time.
