AMMAN — According to data from the Ministry of Finance, Jordan’s public debt reached JD31.462 billion. Meanwhile, the
government debt balance increased to 91.4 percent of the estimated GDP for April 2023.

The balance above includes the debts of the
National Electricity Power Company and the
Water Authority of Jordan, which amount to about JD8.2 billion.
All this data was collected up to April 2023 and excludes what is held by the S
ocial Security Investment Fund, Hala News reported.
Internal and external debts
The external debt was JD17.495 billion while the external debt service reached was JD75 million.
The internal debt reached JD13.967 billion.
Domestic revenue
Domestic revenues increased in the first four months of 2023 to reach a value of JD3.0362 billion, an increase of JD298.2 million compared to the previous year. This increase came as a result of an increase in tax revenues by about JD179.4 million, and an increase in non-tax revenues by about JD118.8 million.
The increase in
tax revenues was primarily through the proceeds of the general tax on “income and profits” by JD217.3 million due to improvements in compliance of taxpayers in submitting tax returns.
Government spending
The
total expenditure of the government during the first four months of 2023 amounted to about JD3.3142 million, an increase of JD212.6 million compared last year.
This increase in total expenditure was due to an increase in current expenditures by JD177.6 million, and an increase in capital expenditures by about JD34.9 million.
