Jordan’s unemployment rate soars by 130% in the last decade

AMMAN — According to a recent analysis there has been a 130 percent increase in the unemployment rate in Jordan during the last decade compared to the previous decade. According to the study, the number of unemployed individuals at the end of last year was approximately 415,000, compared to around 182,000 unemployed individuals in 2013, Al Ghad reported.اضافة اعلان

Unemployment rate reached 22.9 percent
The unemployment rate in the past year reached 22.9 percent, marking an increase from 12.8 percent in 2013, representing a ten-percentage-point increase. In 2014, the unemployment rate reached its lowest point at 11.9 percent, a decrease from 12.6 percent in 2013. This level was the lowest recorded since the early 1990s.

However, the number of unemployed individuals increased in 2015 to approximately 209,000, and in 2016, it rose to around 254,000. In 2017, the number reached approximately 333,000, and in 2018, it was around 323,000. In 2019, it reached 324,000.

The highest rate in the Kingdom’s history
In 2020, the number of unemployed individuals took a different trend, reaching 404,000. It further increased to 435,000 in 2021, marking the highest unemployment rate in the Kingdom's history at 23.3 percent. In the last year, the number of unemployed individuals was 420,000.

Accordingly, the unemployment rate in Jordan during the first quarter of the current year is 21.9 percent, according to recent data from the General Statistics Department.

The labor force of Jordanians during the past year was approximately 1.8 million people. However, the gross economic participation rate (Jordanian labor force as a percentage of the total Jordanian population) experienced a slight decrease of 0.1 percent, reaching 23.8 percent.

The adjusted economic participation rate (Jordanian labor force as a percentage of the total Jordanian population aged 15 and above) also decreased to 33.4 percent.

The labor force in 2013
In contrast, the labor force of Jordanians as a percentage of the total population in 2013 was about 1.4 million people, and the gross economic participation rate was 22.1 percent, while the adjusted economic participation rate was 37.1 percent. The adjusted economic activity rate showed a gradual decline over the past decade, from 37.1 percent in 2013 to 36.4 percent in the following year.

The adjusted economic activity rate experienced a slight increase in 2015, reaching 36.7 percent, before dropping to 36 percent in 2016. However, it increased to approximately 39.2 percent in 2017 before declining again to 36.2 percent in 2018. The rate continued to decrease in 2019 to reach 34.3 percent and saw a slight decline to 34 percent in 2020. It remained stable in the following year and then decreased again by approximately half a percentage point to 33.4 percent in the last year.

The adjusted economic activity rate for Jordanians aged 15 and above during the first quarter of the current year was 33.3 percent, compared to 33.2 percent during the first quarter of the previous year.
