The memorandum was signed by Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh and AP Moller Maersk Deputy Director and Director of Emission Reduction in the company Morten Christiansen on the sidelines of the UN Climate Change Conference 2022 (COP27), held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.

The signing ceremony was attended by Minister of Environment Muawiya Al-Radaydah, and Minister of Water and Irrigation Mohammad Al-Najjar.

Kharabsheh said that the agreement falls within the framework of the Royal directives to promote green partnerships and make Jordan a regional center for green development.

The memorandum stipulates that the two sides will explore the possibility of investing in and developing a project to produce marine fuel (green methanol) in Aqaba, through desalinating sea water and exploiting renewable energy sources, he added.

Christiansen said that Jordan was chosen because of its location and abundance of resources, and stressed the need to expedite the implementation of the terms of the memorandum.

Under the memorandum of understanding, AP Moller Maersk will conduct preliminary technical and economic feasibility studies for the project, as the company’s goal, in this investment, is to produce sustainable green methanol in a way that contributes to reducing emissions in the shipping sector.

Maersk is one of the largest container shipping line and vessel operator in the world, with offices and branches in more than 130 countries; it works to reduce carbon emissions in the shipping sector by switching to the use of green marine fuel.
