AMMAN — President of the Economic and Social Council Musa Shteiwi Wednesday said that Jordan suffers from “chronic debt crises and we need financing”, since “we suffer from regional crises” as well, according to Khaberni News.اضافة اعلان

There is disparity in achieving sustainable development goals in Jordan, he was also quoted as saying on a local news outlet, adding that while some goals have been achieved, in others the country has not been successful, “as is the case with poverty, gender equality, and the provision of clean water”.

Sustainable development requires a set of factors, such as economic and international cooperation to face challenges, such as climate change, in addition to sufficient income to revive the economy, he said.

He pointed out that the change in population as a result of the refugee crisis contributed to the decline in sustainable development. Jordan received some 1.5 million refugees in record time, and that impacted its progress toward achieving the desired goals.

“Failure to achieve sustainable development exacerbates the water problem and increases the unemployment rate, which affects the standard of living of Jordanians,” he added.

Shteiwi indicated that sustainable development means achieving the well-being of present generations without compromising that of future generations, which is a “difficult equation”.

Self-reliance and the utilization of human energy contribute to achieving the sustainable development goals as well as cooperation with other countries, he said.
