updated national strategy to reduce child labor, said the labor ministry
secretary-general, Farouq Al-Hadidi, according to Al-Ghad News.

He said a specialized team has recently finalized
the strategy, which “is an operational plan”.
The comments came during Sunday’s launch of national
events marking the World Day Against Child Labor, entitled “comprehensive social
protection to end child labor”, sponsored by Hadidi on behalf of
Minister of Labor Nayef Al-Istitieh. The world day, declared by the UN, is celebrated on
June 12.
Hadidi said that reducing child labor requires
concerted efforts of governmental and non-governmental entities, in addition to
society, family, civil society organizations and employers in adhering to and
implementing relevant legislation which safeguard children’s rights. He said
that must include children’s right to education and to pull children out of the
labor market, sending them back to school instead.
Hadidi called for further efforts by the government
and employers to reduce child labor, and invited the participation of community
groups, civil society institutions and the media.
The Ministry of Labor established a specialized
section to deal with child labor issues since 1999. The Jordanian Labor Code is
in line with international conventions in the field of combating child labor.
It prohibits the employment of juveniles under 16 years of age. It specifically
bans their employment in hazardous, burdensome or harmful work before they turn
18 years old.
Working hours should not exceed six, and a child
should not work at night, during holidays, public and weekly holidays.
