AMMAN — Jordanians working in Qatar sent home a staggering
JD1.06 billion during the past five years, according to Qatari money exchanges.
In interviews with the Jordan News Agency, Petra, on Thursday,
employees of Qatari exchanges indicated that remittances by Jordanian expatriates in 2022 totaled JD311.9 million, up from JD283.6 million in 2021.
In 2018, the figure was JD106 million. Thus, a comparison of the
value of remittances between 2018 and 2022 shows a significant increase of 66
percent.
The increase, exchange employees said, was driven by the rise in
the number of Jordanian expatriates in Qatar, which went from 45,000 in 2018 to
the current 70,000, in implementation of two Qatari employment initiatives in
2018 and 2020.
Remittances by Jordanian expatriate workers are a key
booster of the Kingdom's foreign currency reserves.
