Jordanian observatory detects 683 earthquakes worldwide in 2023

AMMAN — From January to July of 2023, the Jordan Seismological Observatory at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources reported 683 earthquakes worldwide.اضافة اعلان

The cutting-edge observatory has 23 seismic monitoring stations spread out across the Kingdom to collect data on earthquakes, including slow earthquakes, to be used by engineers and specialized researchers to understand and interpret the mechanism of the earth’s movement and prepare earthquake-resistant building codes.

In a statement released on Monday, the observatory's president, Ghassan Sweidan, noted that 173 earthquakes were local, 301 were regional, and 210 happened in international areas, including Indonesia and New Zealand, Jordan News Agency, Petra reported.

He added that the strength of the tremors recorded inside the Kingdom ranged from 1.3 to 4.5 on the Richter scale.
