AMMAN —
Jordanians are calling for a public beach for low-income people to be set up on
the shores of the
Dead Sea, offering access to the beach for an affordable
entry fee, Addustour Daily reported.

This demand is on
the rise following the shutdown of the Amman Tourist Beach, the only outlet
which offered public access to the Dead Sea, at the beginning of 2020.
People argued that
the public is entitled to have access to a public area on the Dead Sea,
offering complete facilities for the limited-income people.
Director of the
Amman Tourist Beach, Murad Al-Abadi, said the reason for closing the beach was
because the Greater Amman Municipality and the previous investor of the site,
did not reach a final settlement. He said that the site will remain closed
until the dispute is resolved and the beach maintenance work is concluded.
Although the beach
of approximately 180 dunums has been declared closed, many visitors come daily
to the site, as it is the only place along the Dead Sea beach offering services
to the general public, according to Abadi.
CEO of the Dead Sea
Friends Association Zaid Al-Sawalqa said the establishment of an “organized
public beach for low-income people contributes to the promotion of tourism and
reduces random visits along the sea shore”. Sawalqa said investments were
needed in the Dead Sea area.
