The gas leak killed 13
people and injured dozens of others on June 27, when a crane loading chlorine
onto a ship dropped one tank onto the quay, causing it to rupture.
An investigation showed “negligence and major
deficiencies” in safety protocols, prompting Jordan’s Cabinet dismissed the
director general of the state-owned Aqaba Company for Ports Operation and
Management and other port officials. It also fired the director-general of the
Maritime Authority and referred the incident to the Public Prosecutor.
Sunday’s protesters argued that low-ranking employees
were punished, while those up in the ladder who allegedly had a hand in the
incident were let loose.
The pointed out that their beloved ones were among the
victims of the gas leak, which was caused by the shortcomings, negligence and failure
of senior officials in the port.
