NEW YORK — On Sunday, the
Committee to Protect Journalists
(CPJ) called for an independent investigation into an Israeli drone strike that
killed Al-Jazeera journalist Hamza Al-Dahdouh, the son of Al-Jazeera Gaza
bureau chief Wael Al Dahdouh, and freelance journalist Mustafa Thuraya on
Sunday as they drove their car to an assignment in southern Gaza.

“The killings of journalists Hamza Al Dahdouh and Mustafa
Thuraya must be independently investigated, and those behind their deaths must
be held accountable. The continuous killings of journalists and their family
members by Israeli army fire must end: journalists are civilians, not targets,”
said CPJ’s Middle East and North Africa Program Coordinator Sherif
Mansour.
On October 25, Israeli strikes killed five of his family
members, including his wife, daughter, son, and grandson in central Gaza.
CPJ expressed concern over the apparent targeting of
journalists during the war, referring to investigations into a previous strike
in Lebanon as a likely deliberate assault by the
Israeli Occupation Forces(IOF) on civilians, constituting a war crime.
Despite Israel's denial of targeting journalists, Mansour
called for explanations regarding precision attacks and strikes on journalists
away from direct fighting. CPJ's email to the IOF did not receive an immediate
response.
