“There is no doubt that the position of the judiciary is one of the most sensitive and the greatest of work. The judge is entrusted with achieving justice among people and justice is one of the most beautiful names of God,” said a judicial source in an interview with Jordan News.

“Therefore, and in light of the greatness and gravity of this responsibility, there must be principles that govern (judges’) behavior in a manner befitting the particularity of (their) position,” the source said.

“This is why the Judicial Council recently approved the Judicial Code of Conduct,” he said, “which is a set of principles and standards that aim to promote the values of integrity, impartiality, and transparency by establishing codes of behavioral discipline and accountability systems so that the judge is above suspicion and his behavior is not affected by anything.” The Code of Judicial Conduct for 2021 was approved by the Judicial Council at a meeting held at the end of March, and published in the Official Gazette on Thursday.

The importance of this code of conduct lies in the fact that the nature of judicial work requires judges to be aware of people’s social lives and secrets.

Judges are entrusted with preserving people’s dignity, rights, and freedoms, which requires a high degree of integrity, the source said, adding that the code of conduct is designed to bolster the transparency of the judiciary and the trust of society.

The code of conduct, which includes 12 articles, lay out guiding principles for judges in order to enhance their independence, integrity, impartiality, competence, and effectiveness in line with the judiciary’s mission of achieving justice. It also hopes to enhance the role of judges in a way that enhances citizens’ confidence in the judiciary and respect for its role in achieving justice.

According to the code of conduct, judges should effectively perform their duties independently of their own opinion or those of their fellow judges. Judges must observe the principle of integrity in both their public and private lives in a way that enhances citizens’ confidence in them.

The code of conduct prohibits judges and their family members from accepting or requesting a gift or reward that they would not have obtained without their judicial standing, and requires that judges refrain from publishing or commenting on judgments they or others have issued over social media platforms.

It also prohibited judges from making statements and providing information and opinions through various media outlets except with the prior approval of the President of the Judicial Council.
