His Majesty King Abdullah II attended the flag-raising ceremony today, Wednesday, at Al Husseiniya Palace, marking Jordanian National Flag Day, which is observed annually on April 16.

Upon His Majesty’s arrival at the palace courtyard, he was received by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, along with a number of royal family members, and in the presence of several heads of authorities and senior civilian and military officials.
The ceremony began with the royal anthem, followed by His Majesty receiving the Flag of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan from the Chief of the Royal Hashemite Court. The King then handed the flag to an officer from the Jordan Armed Forces – Arab Army, who proceeded to carry it alongside fellow officers toward the flagpole, where it was raised while the flag anthem played, officially launching flag-raising activities across the nation.
The ceremony concluded with the playing of the Flag Anthem, titled “Khafiq fi Al-Maali wal-Muna... Arabi Al-Thilal wal-Sana” (“Soaring in glory and hopes… Arab in shade and brilliance”).
The Council of Ministers had designated National Flag Day as part of the centennial celebrations of the Jordanian state, as a symbol of the pride Jordanians hold in their national flag, which stands witness to the nation’s achievements and the sacrifices of its sons and daughters for its progress and prosperity.
The Jordanian flag, in its current form, was officially adopted in 1922, and is derived in its design and colors from the flag of the Great Arab Revolt. It embodies references to the banner of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), as well as the Umayyad, Fatimid, and Hashemite banners. The seven-pointed star symbolizes the seven verses of Al-Fatiha, the opening chapter of the Holy Quran.
