Brussels, January 29 (Petra) - His Majesty King Abdullah II and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen witnessed today, Wednesday, in Brussels, the signing of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between Jordan and the European Union.
To support the achievement of the agreement’s objectives, the European Union announced a financial aid package for Jordan worth 3 billion euros for the years 2025-2027, including grants amounting to 640 million euros, investments totaling 1.4 billion euros, and macroeconomic support allocations estimated at approximately 1 billion euros.
The signing of the agreement, which was attended by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II, reaffirms the importance of the partnership between Jordan and the European Union and acknowledges the Kingdom’s role in striving for peace and stability in the region.
The agreement aims to strengthen cooperation between the two sides in political, security, and defense fields, economic resilience, trade and investment, human resources, and support for refugees and host countries.
It also includes clauses on enhancing efforts to combat drug and arms trafficking, stimulating private sector investments, and supporting various sectors such as water, energy, technology, and entrepreneurship.
The agreement confirms both sides' commitment to preserving the historical status of the holy sites in Jerusalem and emphasizes the importance of the Hashemite guardianship over the Islamic and Christian holy sites in the sacred city.
Jordan and the European Union announced in July 2024 their intention to elevate their relations to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership, building on the strategic relationship and the partnership agreement signed in 1997, which came into effect in 2002 and remains active.
Commenting on the signing of the agreement, von der Leyen said that Jordan is a key partner for the European Union in the Middle East and the Mediterranean region and plays a pivotal role in regional stability.
She added that the agreement deepens the strong friendship between the two sides and aims to enhance their ability to face common challenges.
The agreement was signed by Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Zeina Toukan on behalf of Jordan and European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Dubravka Šuica, on behalf of the European Union.
The signing was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi, Director of His Majesty’s Office Engineer Alaa Al-Bataineh, and Jordan's Ambassador to Belgium, Yousef Al-Bataineh.
