An informed ministry source told Al-Ghad that “water leakage and
illegal water use are the most important challenges that affect water supply in
the kingdom.”
The source added that the ministry has been working on a campaign
to control water sources since 2013, and has increased penalties to protect
this national resource that belongs to Jordanians.
There have been 59,630 attempts to breach
water pipelines and 24,615 attempts to breach the King Abdullah Canal from 2013
to April 2021, according to ministry’s statistics. The ministry has also shut
down 1,213 illegal wells and stopped 2,445 instances of illegal use of Treasury
lands in the Jordan Valley.
Under the National Water Strategy, the government seeks to reduce
water losses by three to six percent every year, with the goal of reducing
losses to 25 percent by 2025.
The
ministry is continuing to implement projects to increase water supply
efficiency through Farah projects, which are funded through USAID grants.
