AMMAN — The
Omicron variant is not the same as the seasonal flu and is not even from the
same viral category, Dr Wael Al-Husami, a cardiologist at a US hospital was
quoted by a local media outlet as saying.

Husami said that when
it comes to
COVID-19 and its variants, we should compare the bad variants with
a worse variant, but not link them to other virus types.
He also said that
Omicron is the least harmful mutant of all, yet its symptoms could last from 10
to 40 days, adding that studies showed that the Omicron virus may be transmitted
for 10 days by an infected body.
Husami also
contended that the number of current COVID-19 cases in Jordan is compatible
with the nature of the Omicron variant and compares with the number of cases
per population in the
US and other countries.
He added that in
the US, the number of cases of Omicron infections is five times higher than that
of people infected with the Delta variant.
“When cases rise
rapidly, the wave reaches its peak within a week or two and then it plateaus.
It is hard to figure out when we will reach the peak of the fourth wave,”
Husami said, adding that many people fail to take the PCR test to detect the
virus, which could give a distorted image of the reality.
He said that the
wide and rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus and the positive cases impacted the
human capacity in the dynamic fields, and while it was expected in the US, many
hospitals and police stations departments could not cope and shut down.
Husami added
that COVID-19 will persist for several years, saying: “The less severe the
cases are, the more possible it is that people will be infected with the same
virus and its variants again following a month or two, due to the failure of
developing sufficient immunity.”
As for a fourth
shot of the COVID-19 vaccine, Husami said that there has not been discussion
about giving it to people, and that it was only given to the immunocompromised
and those with special health problems.
