The total area of licensed buildings in the Kingdom during January of this year reached 839,000 square meters, compared to 718,000 square meters in January 2024, marking an increase of 16.9%.

According to the monthly report from the Department of Statistics published on Thursday, the total number of building permits issued in the Kingdom reached 1,920 in January, compared to 1,818 permits during the same period last year, an increase of 5.6%.
Regarding the purposes of the licenses, the areas licensed for residential purposes amounted to about 579,000 square meters in January, compared to about 591,000 square meters during the same period last year, a decrease of 2%. Meanwhile, the area of buildings licensed for non-residential purposes reached about 260,000 square meters, compared to about 127,000 square meters during the same period in 2024, an increase of 104.6% (more than double).
According to the report, the area of licensed buildings for residential purposes accounted for 69% of the total licensed building area, while 31% was for non-residential purposes.
At the regional level, the Central Region accounted for 67.7% of the total licensed building area in the Kingdom during January of this year, a decrease of 8.3% compared to the same period in 2024. The Northern Region accounted for 19.5%, an increase of 3.2% from the same period in 2024, and the Southern Region accounted for 12.8%, an increase of 75.3% compared to the same period in 2024.
In terms of the relative distribution of licensed areas for residential purposes by governorates, Jerash recorded the highest percentage at 14.4%, with an area of 0.076 square meters per person. In contrast, Madaba recorded the lowest per capita share of licensed new areas, with 3%, or 0.016 square meters per person.
The area licensed for new buildings and additions to existing buildings made up 65.2% of the total licensed building area in January of this year, while the area licensed for existing buildings accounted for 34.8%.
The total area of licensed buildings for new buildings and additions to existing buildings was approximately 546,000 square meters, compared to about 483,000 square meters during the same period in 2024, an increase of 13%.
