He secured 58 votes against 56 won by his only
contender Zaid Al-Atoum in elections held one day after the Parliament
reconvened for an ordinary session. His Majesty King Abdullah inaugurated the
opening session on Sunday, with a traditional Speech from the Throne, outlining
his policies.
The 130-seat Lower House, also known as the Chamber
of Deputies, later elected Ahmad Safadi as speaker, and
Ahmad Al-Khalayleh as
first deputy speaker.
In Monday’s
session, chaired by Safadi and attended by cabinet ministers, lawmakers also
elected deputies Diyab Masaid, and Wael Razouq as Safadi’s assistants. The
Chamber left it to the Permanent Office to choose the committee that will draft
the response to the Speech from the Throne before the session was adjourned
until next week.
