AMMAN — Lower House Chairman of the Agriculture and Water
Committee, Mohammed Al-Alaqma, has expressed his opposition to the government's
proposed restructuring of water tariffs in the Kingdom.

Alaqma called upon
Water Minister Mohammad Al-Najjar to provide
clarifications regarding the plan and voiced concerns that it might lead to an
increase in water prices for citizens, according Jo24.
Surprise and rejection
Alaqma expressed surprise at Deputy Prime Minister for
Economic Affairs and
Minister of State for Public Sector Modernization Nasser Al-Shraideh's recent comments to the media about the water sector, which
included an announcement of the impending restructuring of water tariffs.
The chairman stressed that his committee strongly rejects
any government efforts to raise water prices for citizens, regardless of the
circumstances.

He highlighted the fact that certain areas in the Kingdom
only receive water once a month or even less frequently.
Accountability and mismanagement
Alaqma said the government is attempting to hold ordinary
citizens accountable for the
Ministry of Water and Irrigation's failure to
implement announced projects, which have resulted in the wastage of millions of
dinars.
He specifically mentioned projects such as the Karama Dam,
which cost 55 million dinars, and the wells of Khan Al-Zabeeb and Al-Wala Dam.
Government's restructuring plan
Shraideh, had previously announced the government's
intention to implement a plan to
restructure the water tariff. He clarified
that water bills would be issued monthly starting from September.
In a press statements, Shraidah assured that a transparent
restructuring plan was being prepared by a dedicated team and would be
announced in due course.
