Madaba Governor Mr. Hdayat planted the first native seedling
in the allocated land, which is degraded due to many factors including
overgrazing. Directors of Madaba directorates and members of the local
community followed suit, planting Jordanian native seedlings propagated at WADI
nurseries, in structures designed for rainwater harvesting, to ensure maximum
collection of rainwater.
The planting activity seeks to restore the ecosystem in the
area, thus improving air quality and biodiversity, and providing a public space
for leisure for the local community, not to mention short-term economic
opportunities for Madaba youth to plant and maintain the land.
During the event Madaba Agricultural
Director Basem Abu Al-Ghanam noted that “Planting trees plays a major role in
the lives of all nations, from environmental, economic, and touristic aspects
as planting trees is an important factor for reducing climate change effects, which
have now become quite evident.”
“The activity, carried out over an area of 360 dunums, seeks
to increase the area’s green cover, rehabilitate it and accentuate its beauty,”
Mr. Abu Al-Ghanam Added.
For his part, WADI Executive Director Mr. Tariq Abu Taleb
said: “As we face increasingly adverse climate effects and more arid
conditions, it is imperative that we invest in the restoration and
sustainability of our resources and empower local communities to conserve and
restore their natural habitats, to ensure our resilience.”
“We are fortunate to have partners in Madaba who are
dedicated to the health and sustainability of Jordan’s nature and resources and
are proud to be working alongside the Madaba Agricultural Directorate, who are
working tirelessly to benefit the people of Madaba,” Mr. Abu Taleb added.
