According to a press statement, around 15 staff from Umm Jummal, Mansheyet Al-Zaatari, Al-Khaldeyeh, and Rehab municipalities alongside the JSC in Mafraq governorate participated in the training.

“This training supported municipalities and the JSC to plan community engagement activities to achieve behavior change at the community level and help the community to have a bigger positive environmental impact,” said Asmaa Thekerallah, a project manager at Oxfam.

The training sessions explored the principles and objectives of community engagement and behavior change strategies and tools to measure the aforementioned engagement.

“This training will help us design behavior change activities to raise awareness at the community level about environmental best practices and turn the municipality’s recycling challenges into opportunities,” said Ali Khazaleh, head of the Social Development Unit at Rehab Municipality.

Khetam Al-Roudan, head of communication and media at the JSC, said she would share what she learned at the training with her council colleagues. “This will help all of us lead and sustain the impact from development projects beyond their closure,” she said.

The training is part of the Waste to (Positive) Energy project, supported by GIZ and funded by the EU and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. Through this initiative, Oxfam has provided more than 600 income opportunities, and more than 3,000 people have taken part in awareness-raising sessions promoting positive environmental practices during the past year.

“Oxfam is always keen to engage local partners and municipalities and to support them by building capacity and exchanging expertise to help them shoulder their environmental responsibilities,” added Thekerallah.

Oxfam seeks sustainable solutions to challenges in Jordanian communities by helping to improve management of waste, supporting water conservation, and promoting environmentally friendly practices.
