— The East Amman Criminal Court sentenced a man to six months in prison
after convicting him of stealing shoes at a mosque in Amman, Saraya News
reported.

The court
had reduced the sentence from one year in prison after taking into account
mitigating circumstances due to the economic repercussions of the coronavirus pandemic.
The
court convicted the defendant of theft, contrary to the provisions of Article
406/1/c of the Penal Code and despite the waiving of the complainant’s personal
right against the defendant.
In the
case, the judge considered the committing of a crime in a place of worship an
aggravating circumstance.
The
thief, the court said, had taken advantage of the fact that worshipers were
preoccupied performing the noon prayer in a mosque in Amman, seizing the
opportunity to steal the complainant's shoes.
The
imam confirmed that he knows both the owner of the shoes and the thief, who, he
said, is known to have a poor reputation. To issue the sentence, the court also
referred to surveillance cameras showing the thief committing the crime.
