AMMAN — On
Saturday, the
Social Security Corporation (SSC) said that in 2021, the number
of women who benefited from maternity insurance, which cost about JD12.3
million, amounted to 109,000, according to Al-Mamlaka TV.

The SSC said
that during maternity leave, which last for seven weeks, insured women are paid
an amount equal to that of the last wage registered with the SSC, as stipulated
in the
Jordanian Labor Law.
The amount
is paid upon the issuance of the child’s birth certificate to women working in
the private sector who has subscribed to the SSC provided for a period of not less than six
continuous months. Women will be also paid in case of the death of the baby,
upon provision of the birth certificate of said child.
The statement
said that maternity insurance is in line with the SSC’s keenness to provide
protection and security to insured women working in the private sector, which
encourages employers to hire married or pregnant women.
It also
reflects the corporation’s appreciation of the importance of women
participation in the labor market, according to the SSC, which also said that
its actions provide guarantee for women and employers in a bid to build a work
relationship in which the rights of each party are respected, empower women
economically and socially, and help reduce unemployment rates among women.
The monthly
subscription for maternity insurance amounts to 0.75 percent of the employees’
wages, a sum which must be paid by the institution they work for, according to the
SSC, which said that maternity insurance applies to all insured women, except
for those who subscribe voluntarily or for workers in government departments
and official or public institutions.
The SSC said
that insured women who are entitled to maternity leave may ask for it through
the corporation official website or through a mobile application.
Insured
women are entitled to six months of free-of-charge care for their children in
preschools affiliated with the institutions they work for, or at home,
according to the statement.
