AMMAN - The Minister of Political and Parliamentary Affairs and Chairman of the Ministerial Committee for the Empowerment of Women, Musa Maaytah, discussed Thursday with the Executive Director of the United Nations Women, Sima Bahouth, means to enhance cooperation women's issues.

Maaytah stated that women assuming leadership positions is vital to reaching gender equality, pointing out that Jordanian women are holding several leadership positions.
During the meeting, he indicated that the government is working to strengthen mechanisms, laws and legislation to boost the role of women, especially in the economic and political sectors.
The minister pointed out that the institutionalization of Ministerial Committee's work in 2015 was an indicator of the government's focus on women's issues and its endeavor to enhance female representation and empowerment in various fields. He also pointed to a number of measures taken by the Committee to provide social protection for women and empower them in economic, political and social fields.
The outcomes of the Royal Committee to Modernize the Political System on elections and political parties laws related to youth and women will enable women to reach parliament and decision-making positions.
For her part, Bahouth commended the outcomes of the Royal Committee, especially recommendations related to women, noting such changes would enhance Jordanian women's presence in political life, stressing the UN Women's commitment to supporting national mechanisms to promote gender equality.
The United Nations, she added, focuses mainly on four main areas, including governance and political participation, women's economic empowerment, and women's protection from violence, noting that Jordan is doing well in all aspects but must further women's economic empowerment.
She reiterated the UN Women's support for Jordan to develop the economic, legal and political conditions of Jordanian women, underscoring that the
UN body will fully cooperate with the Ministerial Committee to empower women in all fields.
