AMMAN — The
Ministry of Justice on Sunday
launched electronic monitoring as an alternative to judicial arrest and
freedom-depriving penalties.
The electronic bracelet monitoring has come into
effect after the regulation of means and mechanisms for implementing
alternatives to freedom-depriving penalties No. 46 of 2022 entered into force,
according to Al-Mamlaka TV.
Minister of Justice Ahmed Ziyadat said in a press
statement that the regulation was issued based on Article 25 of the amended
Penal Code, which expanded the category of alternatives to liberty-depriving
punishments to include electronic monitoring through the electronic bracelet.
According to the regulation, a court can issue a
ruling to place a person under electronic surveillance and determine the time
length and geographical scope that is allowed. The Directorate of Operations
and Control in Public Security Directorate
will follow up on the convict’s adherence to the conditions of the
sentence.
Among the benefits expected from the application of
the electronic bracelet is a reduction of the effects of freedom-depriving
penalties and judicial arrests for first-time offenders and non-repeated
offenses, and the achievement of a preventive policy that helps some avoid
mixing with other inmates and convicted persons, and preserves the offender’s
source of livelihood.
Ziyadat added that the
ministry has purchased 1,500 electronic bracelets that will be used for this
purpose, and that the system can be expanded in the future to reach 5,000
bracelets if the need arises.
