AMMAN — The
Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the
Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army on Wednesday
signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance cooperation in the field of
mining and prospecting for rare-earth elements in Dubaidib area, east of the
coastal city of Aqaba.

Under the agreement, within a
maximum of two years, a preliminary assessment and geological surveys will be
conducted on a 2,400 sq.km. area.
Energy Minister Saleh Al-Kharabsheh
said that the agreement stipulates the exploration of 17 rare-earth elements,
besides lithium, in the Dubaidib area, and that the ministry's initial
exploration indicates that these elements are available in good quantities in
the region.
Companies interested in exploiting
strategic minerals are encouraged to submit bids directly to the ministry,
Kharabsheh said.
