The ministry said that the agreement is part of the
US Economic Assistance Program for the Jordanian government, which comes within
the memorandum of understanding between the two countries for the period
2018–2022.
In February 2018, Jordan and the US signed a
memorandum of understanding for aid worth $6.375 billion, spread over five
years, of $1.275 billion annually, of which at least $845.1 million goes to
support the Jordanian government budget, and $425 million as military aid.
Earlier this year the US Congress approved the
allocation of $1,650 billion as a grant to Jordan, as part of the memorandum of
understanding.
Planning Minister Nasser Al-Shraideh had said that this aid
comes to support the Kingdom’s development and reform programs during the
current year 2022, in view of challenges to the Jordanian economy, including
those brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Syrian refugee crisis.
