AMMAN — The Ministry of
Agriculture’s epidemiological monitoring system recorded 11,000 cases of
foot-and-mouth disease among the Kingdom’s
livestock as of last Tuesday, with
10 deaths, according to the ministry’s assistant secretary-general for
livestock, Ali Abu Nuqtah.

Vaccination efforts will target areas
surrounding farms where the infections have been recorded, he said. About
50,000 doses of the vaccine have been imported into the Kingdom, and several
farms have already been vaccinated, Saraya News reported.
The ministry announced the
closure of livestock markets in the governorates outside Amman for a period of two weeks
after it discovered new infections. This is due to the fact that the virus can
spread via the air as far as 10km, and is also transmitted via solid objects
such as shoes and car tires.
Meanwhile, the ministry prohibited the
transport of animals in or out of the Al-Dhuleil and Al-Khalidiyah areas, where
infections are concentrated.
