Ministry seeks to amend Penal Code to deal with protection rackets

AMMAN — The Ministry of Justice has proposed amendments to the Jordanian Penal Code with the aim of strengthening penalties on those who practice protection rackets, by adding Article 415 as a special text to combat the phenomenon of "protection rackets" to protect investors and establishments and provide a safe environment for investment.اضافة اعلان

Official sources told Al-Ghad News that the ministry formed a committee to come up with the necessary amendment with the participation of the Public Security Directorate and legal experts. The amendment will then be approved by the Cabinet before being presented to the Lower House for approval.

The same sources said that the text dealt with all cases of protection rackets that the owners of shops and companies are subjected to, and it also increased the penalties for anyone who takes money for protection ranging from two years imprisonment and up to execution in the event that imposing the protection rackets causes the death of a person.

There are complaints from owners of shops, car showrooms, and owners of companies who are subject to the protection rackets in various forms.

Director of Judicial Execution Management Mohammad Tabishat said that the Public Security Directorate participated in the committee formed in the Ministry of Justice, to review the provisions of the Penal Code and the Jordanian Code of Criminal Procedure.
