AMMAN —
Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya on Sunday
ordered the release of 536 administrative detainees on the occasion of the
holy month of Ramadan, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Prior to the decision, the detainees' cases were checked to
ensure that their release will not place them or citizens in danger, to
maintain public safety.
A call for alternative punishmentsIn a recent interview, Maj. Gen. Ammar Al-Qudah, a legal and
security expert in Jordan, said that 10 percent of
the Kingdom’s prisoners are
in administrative detention based on the
Crime Prevention Law.
Qudah called for a review of administrative
detention in the country, and recommended the use of alternative
punishments.
He also cautioned against attributing all overcrowding of
Jordanian prisons to the Crime Prevention Law.
