The center said
in a press statement on Sunday that international human rights accords
guaranteed the right to privacy while at the national level, the right to
privacy had received a constitutional protection under Article 18 of the
Constitution. It said that the law has guaranteed this right and criminalized
its abuse.
It said that
Article 7 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights asserted
the right of everyone not to be subjected to arbitrary or unlawful interference
with their privacy, their family, home, correspondence, or any unlawful
campaign against honor or reputation.
The NHCR added
that the Human Rights Committee of the International Covenant on Civil and
Political Rights has indicated that the protection of correspondence and
communications is one of the components of the right to private life, and that
any sort of monitoring must be supervised by an independent judiciary.
It is necessary to confront
any violations, in order to guarantee such right, whether the violation was
from state authorities or by persons, it added.
