In a statement on
Tuesday carried by the Jordan News Agency, Petra, the NCHR called for pursuing
policies aimed at raising awareness of the importance of women’s participation in
public life, their access to leadership opportunities, and an enhanced role as
key partners in the decision-making process.
Moreover, the
statement suggested amending trade and professional union laws to guarantee
that women have a seat at the table, as well as increasing women’s
participation in the judicial council and in academic entities.
Despite social and
economic challenges facing women, some breakthroughs have been made, the center
noted, citing a recent constitutional amendments which guarantee women an equal
opportunity alongside men to play an active role in the Jordanian society, as
well as protection against all forms of violence and discrimination.
However, the center
reiterated the need to further amend national legislation in line with international
human rights obligations, within a gender-sensitive approach. It called for
supporting women’s economic and social empowerment by providing them with job
opportunities and developing their skills in accordance with the labor market’s
needs.
