Amman - The National Centre for Human Rights (NCHR) on Tuesday called for intensifying awareness campaigns an the dangers of drugs and psychotropic substances and coordinating joint efforts in this context.

In a statement on the occasion of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which falls Wednesday, the NCHR valued the "major" role of the Jordanian Armed Forces (JAF)- Arab Army and the security apparatuses in thwarting smuggling of narcotic substances via the Kingdom's various crossings.
NCHR also referred to efforts to raise awareness of the dangers of this phenomenon and prosecute the perpetrators of these criminal acts and bring them to justice.
NCHR said the world celebrates this occasion on June 26 annually, with the aim of highlighting the drugs dangers, which are a "key" challenge facing humanity now.
The center noted the importance of international cooperation to combat drugs, given their negative repercussions on human rights and the sustainable development goals related to good health and well-being.
Additionally, NCHR stated that this phenomenon violates the human right to enjoy the "highest" standard of health, and is a threat to the human ability to enjoy economic and social rights.
As a threat to national, regional and global societal cohesion and security, the NCHR said drugs are an organized cross-border crime, which requires global cooperation and solidarity to curb its spread.
