In a statement on Thursday, NCHR stressed the need to achieve women's economic empowerment, and strengthen the response system to deal with violence cases by all concerned sectors, as Jordan's Constitution guarantees women protection from violence, according to the 6th clause of Article VI.
This article came as part the recently-launched constitutional amendments endorsed in 2022 and constitutes a "fundamental" step in the national legal system to enhance women protection from all forms of violence, the NCHR said.
In addition, Jordan's legislation provides regulations that offer protection in this context, foremost is Jordan Penal Code and its amendments No. 16 of 1960.
The center also highlighted endorsement of multiple policies to reduce women-related violence, mainly Council of Ministers’ decision in 2021 to approve implementation plan for national priorities to strengthen protection system from gender-based violence and child protection for 2021- 2023.
Despite these developments, the NCHR said a need still persists to launch a comprehensive review of Jordan's legislative system to ensure more protection.
