The move, which comes as part of an agreement made in
January of last year, will increase the supply of electricity to Palestine from
40 megawatts to 80 megawatts.
The project is “vital to cementing cooperation between
Jordan and Palestine”, NEPCO Director-General Amjad Rawasheh said during an
inspection of the power station on Tuesday.
He underlined the importance of this move within the
framework of the pan-Arab electric interconnection projects to serve the joint
Arab market and meet the electricity needs of
Palestinians. The project, he said,
is the second phase of the Jordanian-Palestinian electric interconnection and builds
on years of achievements.
Rawashdeh furthermore highlighted the ongoing
cooperation with
Palestine within joint technical studies to continue providing
solutions that increase supply, as well as continuing to train Palestinian
technical staff in Jordan through a special NEPCO training program that
features establishing, operating, and maintaining electrical systems.
On January 15, 2020, NEPCO signed an agreement to
increase its power supply to Palestine as part of a cooperation project that
began in 2008.
