His statements came
during the launch of a study which will last until 2030 and is intended to
develop the capabilities of the Jordanian electrical grid and expand the
capacity to produce more renewable energy.
The study will be carried out by the
German-Belgian Company Elia Group, with funding from the German government within the
framework of the Jordanian-German Energy Partnership.
Minister Kharabsheh affirmed that renewable energy
is considered a strategic option to enhance electricity production.
He said that the current contribution of renewable
energy to electricity generation is about 25 percent, with the goal of
increasing it to 50 percent by 2030.
Kharabsheh said that Jordan has plenty of renewable
energy sources, given the strategic geographical location of Jordan, the number
of sunny days during the year, and the expertise that enables the Kingdom to
rely more on renewable energy sources.
His comments come a few days after he insisted on
imposing a controversial monthly fee on
electric bills issued to owners of home
solar energy systems. He claimed that energy produced by domestic renewable
energy systems during the day goes largely unused and that issuing new home
solar energy systems licenses to will drive distribution companies out of
business.
