AMMAN
– A report issued by the
Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) shows that 9.5
percent of the world's population was
undernourished during the period 2018-2020,
compared to 5.5 percent in the period 2004-2006, according to Al Ghad news.

The number of undernourished
people, according to the report, reached one million in the period 2018-2020,
while about 300,000 were undernourished in the 2004-2006 period.
The
undernourishment index, as per FAO, is an estimate of the proportion of the
population that normally consumes insufficient food to meet the caloric energy
levels needed to maintain a normal and healthy life.
According to the report, Jordan is among 23 countries and territories that have
experienced food insecurity due to conflict; in Jordan’s case, hosting Syrian
refugees was a contributing factor.
The Food Security Survey in Jordan for 2013/2014, carried out by the
Department of Statistics, shows that 6,200 families in the Kingdom (28,078
individuals) were not food secure, compared to 3,800 families in 2010, an
increase of 61 percent.
Food security is the ability of a
family to secure enough food to meet the nutritional needs of its members,
while in case of food insecurity, people are undernourished due to lack of food
or inability to obtain it.
