AMMAN —
On Monday, students from the
Hashemite University and Queen Rania Faculty of
Tourism and Heritage, in cooperation with the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army,
the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, and the Safawi Municipality started
rehabilitating the oldest cinema in Jordan, established at the end of 1932 at
the Safawi station, which was built along the oil line between Kirkuk and
Haifa, Khaberni reported.

The students
worked on cleaning the cinema, and collected all the films and documents
containing information about the many movies shown at the cinema.
The initiative
aims to highlight the importance of the architectural and industrial cinematic
heritage in Jordan, of which the Safawi station represents a unique example.
Juma Al-Khatib
from the
Tourism Ministry reaffirmed the ministry’s keenness to support
voluntary initiatives of university students, and thanked the Hashemite
University and Queen Rania College for taking this initiative.
Director of
Monitoring and Quality Control at the Ministry of Tourism and Antiques Sorour
Al-Khashashneh said the ministry is eager to find a heritage tourism product
that serves the local community.
Student Maysan
Mohammad from the Queen Rania Faculty of Tourism and Heritage said that
participating in this volunteer work and mixing theoretical work and practical
learning is important.
The Safawi station was
the main station on the oil line between Kirkuk and Haifa; it bore the name H5.
