President of the Jordan Olive Oil Products Exporters
Association Fayyad Al-Ziod noted that 80
percent of olives in Jordan are used in oil production. As a result, solutions
must be found for the challenges facing the olive sector, foremost of which is
olive mill wastewater, he said, emphasizing and applauding the leading role of
the National Center for Agricultural Research’s efforts.
The Kingdom produces 150,000 tonnes of olives per
year, of which 80 percent is used to produce 23,000 tonnes of olive oil. The
pressing process yields 40,000–50,000 tonnes of olive peat and 150,000–200,000
cubic meters of oil mill wastewater.
