Inaugurating the olive harvest season at Al-Rabba,
north of the Karak Governorate, on Saturday, he said that the land planted with
olive trees constitutes 72 percent of the total area planted with fruit-bearing
trees, and 20 percent of the total cultivated area in Jordan.
Hanaifat said that Jordan is one of the beast
natural habitats for olive trees in the Middle East, as evidenced by the
presence of perennial olive trees from Roman time in different areas of the
Kingdom. These trees constitute between 15 percent and 20 percent of all olive
trees.
The minister said that there are 139 olive oil
presses in Jordan, with an estimated production capacity of 451 tonnes per
hour.
He added that the olive sector is one of the most
important agricultural sectors in Jordan, one which is linked with other
sectors, especially the food industry.
According to Hanaifat, the majority of olive oil presses in
the Kingdom are modern, equipped with advanced production lines, and keep pace
with the latest world technology in the field, which contributes to the quality
of the olive oil produced, and its ability to compete and excel.
