The strategy was
drawn up under the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah to designate 2021 as
the year of food security and turn Jordan into a food security regional hub.
During the
ceremony, which was attended by ministers, officials, representatives of
regional and international organizations, and heads of diplomatic missions, the
prime minister said that the Kingdom’s food security ranking has moved up on
the Global Food Security Index from 62 in 2020 to 49 in 2021.
Khasawneh cited
ongoing crises, such as the influx of refugees, the coronavirus pandemic,
climate change, and the
Russian-Ukrainian war, as reasons for the launch of the
strategy, stressing that these crises have made countries vulnerable,
especially when it comes to food security, and exacerbated their economic,
social, and environmental challenges, and stressed that Jordan seeks to achieve
sustainable food security in line with the Kingdom’s commitments to achieve the
Sustainable Development Goals 2030.
The premier
referred to the meeting chaired last week by His Majesty the King to review the
progress of work on the
Agricultural Development Plan in the Kingdom, and the
Royal directives on the need to integrate it in the Food Security Strategy, in
addition to the Economic Modernization Vision.
“The pursuit of
sustainable food security, in line with Jordan’s commitments to achieving the
2030 Sustainable Development Goals, requires that the issue be at the top of
our national, regional and global priorities,” Khasawneh said.
The prime
minister stressed the importance of regional cooperation as Jordan seeks to
become a regional center for food security, and a center for the provision of
related logistical and technical services.
Minister of
Agriculture
Khaled Hanifat said that the government started forming the
National Committee for Food Security, in partnership with all ministries,
government institutions, the private sector, civil society organizations,
international organizations, and development partners from some countries,
adding that the committee led to the institutionalization of food security in
Jordan by establishing the Higher Center for Food Security, headed by the prime
minister, and that Jordan has improved its ranking in international indicators
in food security.
Hanifat added that the
agricultural sector is the main pillar of food security, and in countries that
suffer from water challenges, such as Jordan, the participation of the
industrial and commercial sectors is essential to ensuring the sustainability
of food security.
