The warning emphasized the potential dangers of improper heating practices and stressed the importance of pre-use inspections, as well as the need to avoid leaving devices unattended, especially in the presence of children or when negligence could result in harm.
The PSD specifically highlighted the risks associated with carbon monoxide, a colourless and odorless gas produced by the incomplete combustion of fuels in heating devices.
Referred to as the "silent killer," carbon monoxide poses a significant risk as it can quickly lead to suffocation without any immediate signs, often resulting in fatal consequences for those exposed.
Common symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include nausea, dizziness, breathlessness, and fatigue. If left unaddressed, these symptoms can lead to unconsciousness or death, particularly in cases where individuals are unable to recognize or escape the danger in time.
Despite ongoing public safety campaigns, the Directorate continues to receive reports of incidents linked to improper heater usage, including poisoning and fires caused by factors such as gas leaks, children playing near heaters, and the use of heaters in unsafe or confined spaces.
To mitigate these hazards, the PSD issued a series of safety recommendations. Key guidelines include ensuring adequate ventilation, never leaving heaters unattended while in use, and avoiding the use of heating devices in small, enclosed areas such as bathrooms. It also stressed the importance of keeping children away from heating sources and checking gas hoses for potential leaks.
In the event of an emergency, the PSD urged the public to immediately contact the 911 emergency hotline.
