statement from the
Public Security Directorate (PSD) carried by Khaberni, said.

Criminals use phishing emails to lure
people into clicking suspicious links within the email in order to gain access
to their information such as photos and documents. Often the email will include
claims that the victim has been hacked in order to illicit from them a panic
response. Sums of money are then demanded from the victim in exchange for not
publishing the data.
PSD’s media spokesperson said that,
following an investigation into these complaints, the messages were indeed
intended for the purposes of fraud and electronic extortion.
The spokesperson called on citizens to
refrain from replying to such emails, to delete them from their inbox, and to
not click on any links contained within them. Furthermore, they urged the
public not to transfer any money when faced with extortion, not to register on
unsecured websites, and to report any phishing incidents to the Cybercrime
Unit.
