The Parliamentary Energy and Mineral Resources Committee will discuss on Sunday the adoption of composite (plastic) gas cylinders by the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC).

The committee will also review Jordan’s Green Hydrogen Technology Strategy.
The EMRC has previously approved the use of a new technology for composite gas cylinders, commonly referred to as plastic cylinders, for household use. These cylinders will be available as an option alongside the traditional metal cylinders currently used in homes.
The commission stated that the new 12.5 kg composite gas cylinder, which has the same capacity as the metal one, aims to improve service quality for consumers. The decision followed consultations with industry experts, thorough studies, and an assessment of international best practices.
Pricing and Market Availability
Ziad Al-Saaydeh, Chairman of the EMRC Board of Commissioners, previously stated that the price of the composite gas cylinder will be the same as the metal cylinder.
He added that composite cylinders will enter the Jordanian market once the investment applications for their production and distribution are licensed. The cylinders are expected to be available before the end of the first half of this year.
Licensing and Investment
The EMRC confirmed that it has not yet granted any licenses for the importation or filling of composite gas cylinders but emphasized that investment in this sector is open to all interested companies, with no exclusivity for any single provider.
The availability of these cylinders in the local market will be subject to compliance with Jordan’s technical standards, regulated by the Standards and Metrology Organization, which has conducted 21 tests on the composite cylinders before granting approval.
Plastic Cylinders Will Remain Optional
The EMRC reiterated that composite gas cylinders will remain an option and will not replace traditional metal cylinders, nor will their adoption be mandatory.
The Standards and Metrology Organization affirmed that both metal and composite cylinders are safe for use, provided they meet technical safety standards. It also assured that composite cylinders will only be allowed in Jordan after passing all required tests.
