Focus on Education Reform
Al-Roud emphasized that the committee prioritizes education due to its vital role in sustainable development, stressing the need to address obstacles hindering the advancement of the educational process at all levels.
One of the main topics discussed was a proposal to reduce the duration of some postgraduate programs from 20 months to 12 months in humanities disciplines, while scientific and applied fields would remain unchanged due to their need for laboratories and intensive practical training. The committee is also reassessing the duration of scientific programs, particularly in medicine and engineering, while awaiting a final response from the Ministry of Higher Education.
Teacher Housing in Aqaba
The committee also reviewed the teacher housing issue in Aqaba, which is reassessed annually. There have been calls for policy adjustments to meet teachers' needs. It was noted that the eviction decision has been postponed until the end of the academic year following discussions with the Ministry of Education.
Parliamentary Calls for Education Support
MPs Ibrahim Al-Jabour, Ibrahim Al-Qarala, Tamara Naser Al-Din, Ibrahim Al-Humaidi, Suleiman Al-Zabin, and Issa Nassar stressed the importance of legislation to support the education sector, including:
Improving university funding and employee social security policies
Reevaluating the Ministry of Education’s decision restricting students from retaking more than two subjects in the high school exam, arguing that special cases should be considered
Ensuring higher education policies enhance academic quality
Allowing local universities to introduce postgraduate programs with high standards while tightening regulations on recognizing foreign qualifications
The MPs also emphasized the careful review of PhD program durations, particularly in scientific disciplines requiring extensive practical training, ensuring that any modifications align with student interests and educational quality.
